Stanley

Stanley was founded in 1913 by William Stanley Jr., who revolutionized the beverage container industry by combining the strength of steel with the insulating power of vacuum. He invented the first all-steel vacuum flask, which improved insulation efficiency and enhanced temperature retention for both hot and cold beverages.

Stanley products are known for their rugged construction and durability, making them popular among outdoor enthusiasts, workers, and anyone needing reliable containers for food and drinks under varied and often harsh conditions. Over the years, Stanley has expanded its product range to include a wide selection of thermos mugs, food containers, and similar items, staying true to its core promise of quality and reliability.

The History of Stanley

Origins and the Stanley Thermos (1913–1965)

On September 2, 1913, William Stanley Jr. patented the first all-steel vacuum flask. The idea arose from his work with transformers, where he discovered that a welding process he used could insulate a vacuum flask with steel instead of glass.

Stanley’s new flask was advertised in The Berkshire Courier on July 8, 1915. Shortly thereafter, he established the Stanley Insulating Company in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and began mass-producing the flask under the brand names Ferrostat and later Supervac. He received financial backing for the company from his friend William H. Walker, who served as president, while Stanley was vice president. Walker eventually took full control of the company.

In 1916, William Stanley passed away at the age of 57. Walker died shortly after in 1917.

In 1921, the company was acquired by Landers, Frary & Clark from New Britain, Connecticut, which produced Stanley’s insulated flasks under its Universal brand. Production continued in Great Barrington until 1933, when Landers, Frary & Clark consolidated operations with its factory in New Britain.

The Stanley thermos became known for its durability. It was the only all-steel vacuum thermos in production until the mid-1960s. The U.S. Army reportedly tested Stanley thermoses during World War I by dropping them from airplanes and running them over with heavy equipment. Stanley thermoses were also carried by bomber pilots during World War II.

Acquisitions and Shift Overseas (1965–2020)

In 1965, the Stanley line was acquired by Aladdin Industries in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1988, Aladdin outsourced the assembly of plastic components for Stanley thermoses to Brazil.

In 2002, Stanley and Aladdin were acquired by Pacific Market International (PMI), based in Seattle, which expanded the brand to include other non-insulated products, including barware and flasks. PMI began manufacturing Stanley products in China.

Stanley introduced the Adventure Quencher tumbler in 2016. Early sales were not significant, and the company stopped restocking and marketing it in 2019. After working with Buy Guide, a blog run by women in Utah, to sell 5,000 Quenchers, the company resumed production in an increasingly wide range of colors. The product became the primary driver of Stanley’s annual sales, which increased from $70 million in 2019 to an estimated $750 million in 2023. After successful influencer marketing campaigns for the Quencher, Stanley has shifted its marketing strategy to primarily target women.

Rebranding and the "Stanley Cup" (2020–Present)

In 2020, the company hired Terence Reilly, formerly with Crocs, as its president; Quencher sales increased by 275% between 2020 and 2021. In November 2024, Stanley announced a multi-year partnership with football player Lionel Messi, marking the company’s first collaboration with a professional athlete. The partnership will see Stanley introduce a range of new products, namely The Quencher ProTour Flip Straw Tumbler, High Precision Flow Mate System, Classic Mate Mug, and Mate Bombilla.
